I came across Battle Challenge: Funny Filter on the App Store during one of those late-night scrolling sessions. It's basically a photo editing app with a twist — instead of just slapping on beauty filters, it lets you create these goofy battle scenes where you can photoshop yourself into a fight with someone else's face. The whole thing feels like those silly meme generators from a few years back, but with smoother editing tools. I noticed it had a decent number of downloads, and it's free to install, though you do get hit with ads pretty often unless you pay for the premium version. My first impression after opening it was that the interface is a bit chaotic, lots of bright colors and buttons everywhere, but once you get past that initial shock, it's not too hard to figure out.

After using it for a few days, I got a better sense of how it works. The onboarding screen tries to teach you the basics, but I mostly ignored it and just started tapping around. You pick a photo from your gallery, then choose a "battle pose" template. The app automatically cuts you out from the background, which works okay in good lighting but gets messy if your hair is wild or there's weird shadows. Then you pick an opponent from their library of celebrity faces or upload someone else's photo, and the app generates this cartoony fight scene. The controls feel a bit stiff when you try to resize or rotate things, and sometimes I had to restart because the layers wouldn't line up right. A small tip I picked up is to use photos with plain backgrounds — it saves a lot of headache with the cutting tool.

After a week, I kind of see who this app is for and who might get annoyed by it. It's definitely fun if you're into making memes with friends or just want to waste 15 minutes making your brother look like he's getting knocked out by a celebrity. But if you're looking for a serious photo editor with precision tools, this isn't it. The ads get annoying fast, and the free version limits how many templates you can use. Compared to something like PicsArt or FaceApp, this is way more niche and gimmicky. I kept it on my phone because it's good for a laugh when I'm bored, but I can see someone deleting it after a week once the novelty wears off. It's not a tool you use every day, but for specific moments, it does its job.

features

  • 😄 The main hook is the battle template system, which lets you paste faces into fight scenes. It's more playful than standard filters like those in FaceApp, which focus on aging or gender swaps. Instead of making you look pretty, it makes you look like you're throwing a punch.
  • 😄 The cutout tool is surprisingly decent for a free app, though it's no match for Photoshop Express. It actually separates your face and body from the background without too much manual tweaking, which keeps the process fast and casual.
  • 😄 The huge library of opponent faces — celebrities, movie characters, and memes — sets it apart from apps like Snapchat or Instagram filters, which rely on real-time AR. Here you have full control over who you're fighting.
  • 😄 Another standout is the share button layout, which directly connects to messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger. It's clunky in some places but saves you the extra step of saving and re-uploading.

pros

  • ✅ Compared to super polished editors like PicsArt, Battle Challenge is way easier to jump into. I didn't need to watch a tutorial or mess with layers. It's designed for one specific purpose, and it does that well.
  • ✅ It's completely free for the basic stuff. While apps like Facetune or YouCam Perfect charge subscriptions for advanced editing, this one lets you create fun images without paying a cent, even if you sit through some ads.
  • ✅ The templates are updated regularly. I noticed new ones pop up every few days, which keeps it fresh. Apps like Smape filter on the same selection for too long.

cons

  • ❌ The ads are relentless. They pop up after almost every action, sometimes right in the middle of editing. It's way more aggressive than what you get with Meitu or BeautyPlus, which only show them between tasks.
  • ❌ The cutout tool fails badly on complex backgrounds. Unlike Background Eraser, which lets you manually fix edges, Battle Challenge locks you into auto-mode. If it messes up, you're stuck redoing the whole photo.
  • ❌ The template library is limited unless you pay. The free version only unlocks a handful of battle scenes, while others like ImgPlay give you way more free content for similar fun edits.
  • ❌ Export quality is low by default. When you save your creation, the resolution is compressed, so it looks grainy if you try to print it or zoom in. Most other editors at least offer a high-res option.
