I picked up Face Live Camera: Face Filters from the App Store a few weeks ago, just out of curiosity. It's one of those real-time face filter apps that let you put all sorts of wild effects on your face while you record videos or take photos. The core idea is pretty straightforward: you open the camera, it detects your face, and then you can slap on masks, animal ears, funny hats, or even those exaggerated beauty filters that smooth everything out. The app has been downloaded enough times to show it's not completely obscure, and it's free to install. There are in-app purchases if you want the premium filters, and ads do pop up now and then, but nothing that ruins the experience right away. My first impression after launching it was that the interface felt a bit crowded, with too many thumbnails of effects all over the screen, but the face detection kicked in almost instantly, which was a nice surprise.
Once I started playing around with it, the actual experience was a mixed bag. The face tracking is surprisingly responsive, even when I turned my head or made silly expressions, the filters stuck to my face without much lag. You can swipe left or right to browse through different categories of filters, like animals, fantasy, or beauty. There is a small camera button at the bottom to snap a photo, and a record button for video. I spent about ten minutes trying out the dragon mask, the fox ears, and a few sparkly eye effects. One thing I noticed is that some filters look great in good lighting but turn into a glitchy mess in dimmer rooms. The app also lets you save your creations directly to your gallery, which is convenient. However, the onboarding process throws too many pop-ups asking you to rate the app or buy the premium pack, which feels a little pushy for a first-time user.
After using it for a week, I think Face Live Camera is fine for a quick laugh with friends, but I would not call it a daily driver. It does the job of a basic face filter app, but it does not do anything that Snapchat or Instagram filters cannot already do, and those come with better integration and no extra download. If you are someone who likes to make goofy selfies for group chats and you want a standalone app without social media clutter, this might work for you. But if you already use Snapchat or even TikTok, you probably do not need this. The reason I kept it installed for a while was the sheer variety of filters, there are dozens of them, and some are genuinely creative. But the ads and the constant nagging to upgrade eventually wore me down, and I ended up deleting it after a couple of weeks. It is not a bad app, just one that feels a bit redundant in a world full of better options.
features
- 🐱 Real-time face tracking is genuinely fast and handles movements well, even when you turn your head quickly. Compared to Snapchat, which sometimes loses tracking in low light, this app keeps up better in darker rooms, though the filters are less polished overall.
- 🦊 The filter library is huge, with over a hundred options ranging from cute animal ears to spooky Halloween masks. While Instagram has more popular filters, it only gives you a curated selection, so this app feels more like a toy box full of random fun stuff.
- 🌟 The standout feature is the ability to record videos with filters applied directly, without needing an internet connection. Most apps like Snapchat force you to use their platform, but here you can just record offline and save the clip instantly.
pros
- ⚡ The app launches and starts tracking your face within seconds, which is faster than many alternatives like B612 or YouCam Perfect that have longer loading screens and more setup steps.
- 🎨 Filters are updated regularly with new seasonal themes, like Christmas reindeer or Halloween skulls. Snapchat does this too, but the updates here feel more frequent and less tied to advertising campaigns.
- 🆓 The free version offers a solid number of filters without forcing you to pay immediately. Apps like FaceApp hide their best effects behind a paywall, but here you can test many before deciding to buy.
cons
- 📢 Ads pop up too often, sometimes after every single photo you take. Snapchat has no ads during use, and even free apps like YouCam are less aggressive with interruptions.
- 🔇 The app lacks social features like sharing directly to stories or messaging. Snapchat and Instagram let you send filtered photos instantly, but here you have to manually save and upload, which feels outdated.
- 🎯 Some filters are clearly low-quality, with jagged edges that do not blend well with your face. B612 and FaceApp have smoother, more realistic overlays that look professional rather than cartoony.
- 🚫 The premium upgrade is pushed constantly through pop-ups and locked icons. It costs around $5, but many users, including me, find it annoying that half the library is hidden unless you pay.
