I first came across Sider AI a few weeks ago while looking for a browser extension that could help with quick research tasks without jumping between tabs. It's essentially an AI assistant that sits inside your browser, combining a chatbot, image generator, and reading helper all in one spot. Developed by Vidline Inc., it's available for free download on both Google Play and the App Store, though the install counts aren't listed anywhere obvious. Right after launching it, the first thing that hit me was how clean the interface looks — no cluttered menus, just a simple sidebar that pops out from the right. You don't even need to register to start using the basic features, which honestly felt refreshing compared to all the apps that demand an account right away. There are in-app purchases and occasional ads, but I didn't find them intrusive during the first few days.

Using Sider AI day-to-day feels surprisingly smooth. Once you pin the extension, it stays accessible from any webpage. I mostly use it to summarize long articles or ask quick questions without typing into ChatGPT's website separately. The onboarding is straightforward — you click the icon, a chat window slides in, and you can paste links, type questions, or upload images. For example, when I was reading a dense news piece about climate policy, I selected the text, right-clicked, and Sider popped up with a three-bullet summary in seconds. It also handles image generation with DALL-E integration, though that part feels a bit slower. One small tip: if you're comparing product specs side-by-side, use the split-screen feature to keep the conversation visible while scrolling. I did hit a couple of glitches where the assistant froze mid-response, but restarting the browser fixed it.

After a few weeks, I think Sider AI is best for students or professionals who need fast, low-effort research help without jumping apps. It's not as powerful as a dedicated chatbot like Claude or Gemini since those handle complex conversations better, but Sider shines by being right there on the page. What keeps me from uninstalling it is how it fits into my workflow — I can highlight text, get definitions, and draft replies without leaving my email. On the flip side, the free version runs out of daily credits quickly, pushing you toward the paid plan. If you already use ChatGPT Plus or Copilot, you might find Sider redundant. For me, though, it earned a permanent spot next to my bookmarks bar.

features

  • 🤖 Multi-model chat built in — Sider lets you switch between GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini within the same window. When I tested it on a history question, GPT gave a detailed breakdown while Claude offered a more concise version. The main competitor, Monica, also supports multiple models, but Sider makes swapping models quicker with just a dropdown.
  • 📄 On-page reading assistant — Sider reads and summarizes whatever webpage you're on. In practice, I highlighted a 4000-word tech review, and it generated a 150-word summary without leaving the tab. Tools like Perplexity require separate queries, but Sider nails the inline convenience.
  • 🎨 Visual search and generation — The extension combines image lookup and DALL-E generation in one place. In comparison, ChatGPT can't search images directly, and Copilot limits generation to Bing's context. Sider brings both together, though the image quality falls short of dedicated tools like Midjourney.

pros

  • ✅ Zero sign-up for basic features — Most AI tools like ChatGPT or Bard require an account. Sider lets you start chatting immediately. I tested it once during a quick break — no email, no password.
  • ✅ Infinite context memory across chats — Unlike Copilot which loses track after a few exchanges, Sider remembers what you discussed hours later in the same session. This helped when I revisited a product research chat the next day.
  • ✅ Lightweight without slowing the page — Compared to Monica which sometimes lags on heavy sites, Sider runs smoothly even on news portals with tons of scripts.

cons

  • ❌ Limited free daily credits — After about 40 queries, the free tier locks you out until the next day. On busy days, I ran out mid-afternoon, pushing me toward the $14/month plan — which is pricier than ChatGPT Plus.
  • ❌ Occasional freezes during long sessions — If I asked more than 20 questions without a break, the sidebar sometimes hung. A full browser restart fixed it, but it's annoying compared to Perplexity's stable performance.
  • ❌ No mobile offline mode — The app version needs a constant internet connection. Unlike Google Lens or Apple's built-in AI, you can't use Sider to scan and summarize documents offline.
