Tap Challenge - Funny Filter is one of those casual mobile games you find while scrolling through the Play Store, and it basically turns your camera into a low-stakes party game. You use your front camera, and the app drops silly filters or masks on your face, then tasks you with tapping specific targets that pop up on screen before time runs out. It's not a deep experience or a high-production title, more like something you download when you're bored at home or want to kill time with friends. I saw it had a decent number of installs and is free to download, though there are ads and optional in-app purchases. My first impression after launching it was mixed. The color scheme is bright and the UI is simple, but the layout felt a little cluttered, and I wasn't immediately sure where to start, which is common for these smaller apps.
After using it for a while, the hands-on experience is mostly about reacting fast while keeping your face in frame. Once you hit start, the app asks for camera permission, then throws a filter on your face, like a cartoon hat or a funny nose. Then targets start appearing around the screen, and you have to tap them before they vanish. The tricky part is that your facial movements also affect the filter, so if you laugh or move your head, the filter wobbles, which can make it harder to tap accurately. I found the onboarding a bit abrupt. There is no tutorial other than a quick text pop-up, so I spent the first few rounds just figuring out what I was supposed to do. Over time, the game gets more chaotic, adding more targets and faster timers. A practical tip I picked up is to hold your phone steady and move only your thumbs rather than turning your head, because the filter tracking gets confused if you shift too much.
After spending a few sessions with Tap Challenge - Funny Filter, I think it is a decent time-waster, but not something I would keep on my phone for long. It is fun in short bursts, especially if you have someone else to play with or laugh at the filters. That said, the ad frequency annoyed me after a while. You get a banner ad at the bottom and a full-screen video after every few rounds, which breaks the flow. Compared to similar apps like Snapchat's filter games or even Face Dance, this one feels less polished and more random with its timing. People who enjoy silly photo effects and don't mind interruptions might enjoy this. But if you prefer polished arcade games or apps with leaderboards and progression systems, you will likely uninstall it after a day.
features
- 🎭 Real-time face tracking filters react to your expressions, so if you smile or frown, the filter moves accordingly. This makes the game harder than just tapping, because your face becomes part of the obstacle. Similar apps like Snapchat also have filters, but they focus on static selfies, not gameplay integration.
- 🕹️ The tap-target system ramps up difficulty quickly. Early rounds give you big slow targets, but within a minute, you get small fast-moving ones. This feels closer to arcade rhythm games than typical photo apps. Apps like Face Dance rely more on synchronized movement, while Tap Challenge focuses purely on speed and accuracy.
- 🎨 The filter variety is decent for a free app. You get animal ears, hats, glasses, and even wacky distortions like big lips or fish eyes. However, many filters are locked behind in-app purchases or watching ads. Competitors like Snapchat or Instagram offer more filters for free, but Tap Challenge gamifies them by tying filters to score multipliers.
pros
- ✨ Free to download and play without a forced subscription. You can unlock filters by watching ads, which is a fair trade-off for casual users. In contrast, apps like Snapchat push premium lenses behind a paywall.
- ⚡ Quick session length works perfectly for short breaks. Each round lasts about 30 seconds, so you can play while waiting for coffee or during a commute. Face Dance requires longer sessions for full songs.
- 🎉 The randomness of filters keeps each round fresh. You never know if you will get a simple hat or a full-face distortion, which adds replayability that more static apps lack.
cons
- 📱 The camera tracking is inconsistent on older devices. On my mid-range phone, the filter would lag or lose my face shape when I moved too fast. Snapchat's tracking is far smoother and more reliable.
- 🔁 Limited gameplay variety. After ten rounds, you have basically seen everything. There is no level progression, unlockable stages, or story mode. Face Dance offers multiple songs and choreographed routines that keep things fresh.
- 📺 Ads interrupt gameplay too aggressively. A full-screen video appears after every three rounds, and sometimes even after a single round if you lose. Apps like Instagram do not force ads during a game session.
- 🎯 Some filters obscure the tapping targets. When a large filter covers half the screen, you can't see where to tap, which feels like a design oversight rather than a challenge.
