Hair Color Changer: Change you is a niche utility app, not a full beauty editor. It's designed for one specific task: swapping your hair color in photos without needing to learn complex editing software. You snap or upload a selfie, then the app tries to detect your hair and paint over it with a selected shade. I first came across it on Google Play, where it shows a modest install count and offers free download with in-app purchases for extra colors or removal of watermarks. The first impression after launching is mixed—you're greeted with a simple interface and a big “Let's Start” button, but there are also ads for the first few seconds, which feels slightly cheap. Still, for someone who just wants to see if they'd look good with pink hair at a party, it's a quick tool to play with.
After the initial ad, you pick a photo from your gallery or take a new one. The app then automatically outlines your hair area with a purple mask—sometimes this works perfectly, other times it bleeds into your forehead or background. You can manually adjust the mask by erasing or adding areas with your finger, which is smoother than I expected on a phone screen. Then you pick a color from the palette—blonde, red, blue, and more—and tap “Apply.” The result appears in seconds. In daily use, you might need to redo it a few times to get the mask right; a tip is to choose a photo where hair is clearly separated from the face. There's no undo button, so if you mess up, you start over. The app also includes a “Makeup” option to add lipstick or eye shadow, but it's awkward and feels tacked on as an upselling tactic.
After using it for a few days, I think it's made for impulsive experimentation rather than serious editing. YouTubers or cosplayers might keep it for quick tests before committing to dye, but beauty bloggers who want polished results would be better off with YouCam Makeup or Adobe Photoshop Express. What sets Hair Color Changer apart is its narrow focus—it doesn't delay you with dozens of sliders. However, the free version slaps a watermark and limited colors, so unless you buy the full pack, it's just a teaser. I personally uninstalled it after a week because the ads grew annoying, but I can see someone keeping it if they frequently change hair styles or try new looks for fun.
features
- 🎨 The standout feature is the automatic hair detection brush. Unlike YouCam Makeup, which requires you to manually paint over hair even on the free plan, Hair Color Changer instantly highlights your hair area with AI. In my tests on straight dark hair, it nailed it almost every time. The app does a better job at edges than most rivals I've tried.
- 🎨 Another plus is the real-time preview. You can swipe between colors without saving the photo each time, which is missing in apps like Hair Color Booth. This makes the app faster for trying out five different shades in a minute.
- 🎨 The app also includes a “Custom Color” option in the paid version, letting you pick any hex code shade. This is rare among niche hair apps; the popular ones usually stick to 10 preset colors. It's great for fashion fans who want a perfect match.
- 🎨 The sharing button is unusually polished, with direct exports to Instagram or TikTok stories in the right aspect ratio. That's convenient if you just want to post a funny before-and-after without cropping.
pros
- 👍 Simplicity is Hair Color Changer's biggest strength over heavy apps like PicsArt or YouCam. It does just one job without burying you in menus—tap, choose, apply. My grandmother could figure it out in under a minute.
- 👍 The app's AI mask is noticeably more accurate than the free version of FaceApp, which often treats stray hairs as background. Here, even on curly or fine hair, the base mask covers most areas right from the start.
- 👍 The paid upgrade is relatively cheap compared to subscription models from competing editors. Many rival apps charge a monthly fee, but Hair Color Changer uses a one-time purchase for the full color palette.
cons
- 👎 Ad frequency in the free version is disruptive. Every second or third edit shows a full-screen video ad, which is more aggressive than YouCam Makeup's banner ads. It kills the trial experience for casual users.
- 👎 The manual mask adjustment tool is imprecise on small screens. On a 6-inch phone, erasing a hair blob with your thumb is clumsy, unlike Hair Booth's zoom-and-fine-tine approach. You'll often correct more than you intended.
- 👎 The app lacks blend or opacity sliders, so all color looks flat. In competition with FaceApp's hair tool, which offers a natural “fade” effect, Hair Color Changer's results can appear like a uniform paint job, losing realism.
- 👎 The “Makeup” module is poorly integrated. It's just an overlay that doesn't adapt to skin tones or lighting, so I skip it entirely. It feels like an afterthought to boost in-app purchases, unlike the cohesive makeup tools in BeautyPlus.
