DeepArtEffects is a photo editing app that uses AI to transform your snapshots into something that looks like a painting. It's one of those apps on Google Play and the App Store where you pick a style, drop in a photo, and wait a few seconds for the algorithm to do its thing. People mainly use it to make their travel pics, portraits, or random selfies look like Van Gogh or Picasso had a go at them. The first time I installed it, which took just a moment since it's free to download with optional in-app purchases, I was struck by how clean the landing screen looked. No clutter, just a bunch of style thumbnails and a big button to grab a photo. That straightforwardness made me want to try it right away, especially since the app's install count is pretty high, so it felt like a safe bet.
Once you launch DeepArtEffects, the interface is mostly tap-and-go. You pick an image from your gallery or take a new one, then choose a style from a grid that loads fairly fast. The AI processes the picture in the background, showing a progress bar that sometimes hangs for a few seconds longer than you'd expect. After the effect applies, you can adjust the intensity with a slider, which is a nice touch because the default mix can be too strong. I found myself sliding it down to about 70% for most photos. The app also lets you crop and rotate before applying, which saves you the hassle of jumping to another tool. A small thing I learned: if you pick a style that's too busy, like a dense brushstroke pattern, faces can end up looking like blobs, so stick to simpler styles for people shots.
After using DeepArtEffects for a couple of weeks, I think it's perfect for casual users who just want a couple of artistic edits for social media without learning complex software. But someone heavily into photography might find the styles limited and the occasional graininess annoying. What sets it apart from apps like Prisma is that DeepArtEffects focuses entirely on painting-like effects, while Prisma now throws in a bunch of social features and filters. I kept it installed because it's quick for a single edit, but I can see uninstalling it if the style library doesn't grow. It's not a daily driver, just a fun tool for those moments when a regular filter feels boring.
features
- 🖼️ Style variety: DeepArtEffects offers about 40 different art styles, ranging from oil painting to impressionism. Compared to Prisma, which has a bigger library but also leans toward modern effects, DeepArtEffects focuses exclusively on classic art looks. The standout feature is how it preserves the original photo's lighting and shadows under the paint, so you don't lose the scene's mood.
- ⚡ Processing speed: Most edits finish in under 10 seconds on a decent phone. That's faster than Dreamscope, which can take up to a minute. The tradeoff is that finer details like hair or grass can get muddied, but for a quick edit, the speed is a win.
- 📱 No account required: You don't need to sign up or log in to use the app. That's a huge plus compared to apps like PicsArt, which push you to create an account. DeepArtEffects lets you jump straight into editing, and the free tier gives you a fair number of uses before it nudges you toward a subscription.
pros
- ➕ Smooth onboarding: The app doesn't bombard you with tutorials or prompts. You pick up and use it right away, unlike Photoshop Express which drops you into a crowded dashboard with too many buttons.
- ➕ Clean export options: You can save in high resolution without watermarks on the free version. Apps like PhotoLab charge extra for that, so DeepArtEffects feels generous here.
- ➕ Lightweight install: The app takes up under 100 MB, which is a relief compared to something like YouCam Perfect that bloats to half a gig. It runs fine on older Android phones without lag.
cons
- ➖ Limited style updates: The style list hasn't changed much since I downloaded it. Prisma adds new filters every month, so DeepArtEffects can feel stale after a while.
- ➖ No batch processing: You can only edit one photo at a time. Apps like Adobe Lightroom allow bulk edits, so if you have a whole album to stylize, this app wastes your time.
- ➖ Occasional crashes: On my phone, the app froze twice when I tried to save a heavily stylized image. I never had that issue with Snapseed, which is more stable overall.
- ➖ No social sharing built-in: You have to manually save and then upload to Instagram or elsewhere. Competitors like PicsArt let you share directly from the editor, which feels more connected.
