AI Art Generator - AI Yearbook is one of those photo editing apps that jumped on the whole AI portrait trend. You download it from Google Play or the App Store, and it's basically free to install, though a lot of the cooler styles are locked behind in-app purchases. The main idea is you upload a few selfies, and it transforms your face into these retro yearbook-style portraits or other artistic looks. After launching it for the first time, the app hits you with a pretty standard permission request for your camera and gallery, which feels normal enough. The interface isn't super polished, but it's functional, and the promise of seeing yourself in a 90s-themed photo is what gets most people to stick around through the initial setup.
Getting into the actual experience, the onboarding is straightforward. You pick a style pack, upload around 5-8 clear photos of your face from different angles, and then wait for the AI to process them. The waiting time can be a bit long, sometimes a couple of minutes, and during that period, the app doesn't give much feedback, so you just sit there wondering if it's actually working. Once the results come in, though, it's pretty satisfying. The generated images actually look like you, which is more than some other AI apps manage. Navigating between the different style packs can get confusing because they're all laid out in a grid with tiny preview images, and it's easy to tap the wrong one and end up paying for something you didn't mean to. A small tip: always preview the style with your own face before committing credits.
After using it for a few weeks, I think it's fun for a specific crowd. If you're into nostalgia or just want a new profile picture that actually looks human, this app delivers. But if you're someone who has tried other AI generators like FaceApp or Remini, this one feels more limited. It focuses heavily on the yearbook aesthetic, so once you've gone through the available styles, there's not much reason to keep it installed. The real downside is the aggressive push for in-app purchases. You get a few free generations, but then it practically begs you to buy coins. I'd say it's worth a download just for the novelty, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people uninstall it after the first few tries.
features
- 🎨 The app's standout feature is its hyper-specific focus on creating yearbook-style portraits. Most AI photo apps, like Lensa or Picsart, try to do everything from cartoon avatars to professional headshots. This one hones in on that nostalgic school photo look, and it actually does it really well. The lighting, the backgrounds, even the hair styles seem tailored to mimic that classic 90s yearbook vibe, which feels more authentic than something generic.
- 📸 The real-time preview feature is a small but clever touch. Before you spend your credits on a full generation, you can see a quick mockup of how one of your photos will look in a specific style. This saves a lot of waste because some styles just don't work well with certain face shapes or angles. Other apps make you guess, and you end up burning your free tries on looks that turn out weird.
- ⚡ Another feature that separates it from the pack is the batch generation system. You can queue up multiple style packs at once, and the app processes them in the background while you close the app or browse elsewhere. Some competitors force you to stay on the screen staring at a loading bar, which gets annoying fast. This is a simple but thoughtful convenience that makes the waiting less painful.
pros
- 👍 The biggest strength is the accuracy of the face mapping. Compared to Remini, which sometimes smooths your features into an alien-like mess, AI Yearbook actually keeps your facial structure intact. The results look like "you" in a different decade, not a completely different person.
- 👍 The retro aesthetic is executed with a lot of detail. While FaceApp offers generic filters, this app adds genuine period-appropriate elements like specific shirt collars, hair textures, and background patterns that scream middle school yearbook photo.
- 👍 It's lightweight and doesn't drain your battery as aggressively as some other AI generators. The app doesn't constantly run background processes, and it loads quickly after the initial install, which is a relief compared to bloated apps like Picsart.
cons
- 👎 The biggest weakness is the aggressive monetization model. The free credits run out after maybe two or three full sets of images, and then you're looking at a payment wall. Apps like FaceApp give you a lot more free functionality before asking for money, so this feels stingy.
- 👎 The limited style library is a letdown once the novelty wears off. After you try the few yearbook packs and maybe a couple of art styles, there's pretty much nothing new to explore. The app is too narrow in scope, and there's no regular update cycle to bring fresh content.
- 👎 The processing speed is inconsistent. Sometimes it takes only thirty seconds, other times it hangs for five minutes with no progress indicator. Apps like Lensa handle this better by showing a clear queue and estimated time, whereas AI Yearbook leaves you guessing.
