Hair Color Changer Real is a photo-editing utility that lets you preview different hair colors on your pictures. You snap a selfie or pick a photo from your gallery, and the app uses a color-mapping tool to swap your hair shade in real time. The Google Play listing mentions over ten million downloads, and it's free to install, though you'll see banner ads and pop-ups between edits. Right after launch, you're met with a camera screen and a simple color palette at the bottom. The first impression is that it feels more like a quick joke tool than a serious hair simulator, which is exactly what a lot of casual users are after—something playful to share with friends.
Using the app is pretty straightforward once you get past the initial tutorial pop-up. You tap the area where your hair starts, and the app tries to detect the shape automatically. Most of the time it gets close, but you can brush over missed spots manually with a small finger tool. After that, picking a color from the list changes your hair instantly. I found the real-time preview smooth on my mid-range Android phone, though the app sometimes lagged for a second when switching between bright tones like neon pink or platinum blonde. There's no ability to adjust color intensity or brightness inside the app, so you get what the preset gives you. You can save images in lower resolution for free, but the final export has a watermark unless you watch an ad first.
After a few sessions, I think this app works best for someone who wants a no-fuss hair trial without learning complex editing software. It's good for a laugh or to test a holiday color you'd never actually commit to. But if you're serious about planning a hair dye appointment, this app won't help much because the color layering looks fake—almost like a filter glued on top. Compared to apps like YouCam Makeup, which offer much more realistic blending and texture adjustments, Hair Color Changer Real feels like a toy. That's not necessarily bad if your goal is entertainment, but I uninstalled it after three days because the novelty wore off fast and the ads started to annoy me.
features
- 🎨 One-tap color swap – You just point and tap, and the app changes your hair without needing to trace every strand. Apps like YouCam Makeup require more precise masking, so this is faster for very casual use.
- 🎨 Large preset palette – There are about thirty colors in the default set, ranging from natural browns and reds to unnatural blues and greens. Some apps like ModiFace limit you to ten presets unless you pay.
- 🎨 Real-time preview – The camera view updates as you swipe between colors, which makes it feel responsive. I've tried similar tools that take two to three seconds to render, so this one feels snappier in direct comparison.
pros
- 👍 Free to start – No upfront payment needed, and you get all color presets without a subscription. YouCam Makeup hides half its hair colors behind a monthly fee.
- 👍 Simple interface – The layout is a single screen with only essential buttons, so anyone can pick it up without reading a manual. More advanced editors like Adobe Photoshop Express bury hair tools deep in menus.
- 👍 Low learning curve – You can get a decent result in under thirty seconds, which is faster than most beauty apps on the market.
cons
- 👎 Watermark on free exports – Every saved image has a watermark, and you have to watch an ad to remove it. YouCam Makeup lets you save clean images for free without any extra step.
- 👎 Unrealistic color rendering – The final result looks flat and doesn't blend with natural highlights or shadows. ModiFace does a better job matching color to skin tone and lighting.
- 👎 Frequent ads – A banner sits at the bottom during use, and a full-screen video pops up after every export. Free alternatives like Hair Color Booth show ads less aggressively.
- 👎 No undo button – If you paint outside the hair line, you can't erase without starting over. Most competing tools include a dedicated eraser brush.
