LinkedIn is essentially a social network, but instead of being for sharing vacation photos or memes, it's built entirely around your professional life. People use it to find jobs, connect with colleagues in their industry, follow companies they're interested in, and catch up on business news. You download it from Google Play or the App Store for free, and after installation, you're asked to sign in or create a profile. The first impression after launching it is that it feels quite official and dense—there's a lot of text, notifications about who viewed your profile, and news articles from various sources. It's not something you'd open casually unless you're actively job hunting or trying to network.
After you've set up your profile with your work history and skills, the app feels a bit like a news feed mixed with a resume database. The home screen shows posts from people you're connected to, as well as articles and job recommendations based on your profile. Browsing through it, you can scroll through updates, like or comment on posts, and send messages to other members. One thing that can feel awkward at first is the etiquette—everything feels more formal than other apps, and you're never quite sure if leaving a comment might seem too forward. The job search function is straightforward: you set filters for location, industry, and experience level, and the app shows matching positions. Applying is easy if you have your profile ready, since it can pre-fill application forms with your data.
After using it for a while, I think LinkedIn is definitely useful if you're actively looking for work or trying to build a professional network in a specific field. The news feed gives you a decent pulse on what's happening in your industry, especially if you follow relevant people and companies. However, if you're not career-focused or already have a stable job, the app can feel a bit unnecessary and noisy with constant notifications and sponsored content. Compared to something like Indeed, LinkedIn focuses more on networking and less on just listings, so it feels more social but also more cluttered. I keep it installed for the job alerts and occasional networking, but I don't open it daily.
features
- 🧭 The standout feature is the "Open to Work" banner you can put on your profile picture, telling recruiters you're available. It's simple but effective, and while apps like Indeed let you mark yourself as actively looking, this one makes it visible in a social way.
- 🧭 The "Who's Viewed Your Profile" feature is useful and a little addictive. It shows you who checked out your profile, giving you leads for networking. Other apps like Glassdoor don't offer this kind of social insight.
- 🧭 The skill assessment tests are a nice touch. You can take short quizzes to verify your skills, like project management or coding, and the app adds badges to your profile. It's a small way to stand out, and I haven't seen anything similar on typical job boards.
- 🧭 LinkedIn Learning offers thousands of video courses on business, tech, and creative skills, right inside the same app. While platforms like Coursera have more academic courses, having videos integrated into a professional network makes it convenient for quick learning.
pros
- 👍 One big strength is the sheer size of its user base. Millions of recruiters and professionals are active here, so your profile gets real visibility. That's hard to beat compared to niche networking platforms that are smaller.
- 👍 The app is good at suggesting relevant connections based on your work history and goals. It'll recommend people from your school, past companies, or same industry, which really helps grow your network organically.
- 👍 The news feed is tailored to your industry, which means you see relevant articles and updates without having to search for them separately. It feels more focused than the general noise you get on Twitter or other social networks.
cons
- 👎 A major weakness is the overwhelming amount of spam and low-quality connection requests. You get a lot of messages from recruiters for jobs that aren't a good fit, or people just trying to increase their audience. It's not as clean as platforms like AngelList that are more targeted.
- 👎 The free version has very limited search capabilities. You can't see full profiles of people outside your network, and the advanced search filters are locked behind a paid subscription. It's frustrating when you're just trying to research a company or person.
- 👎 The app is a bit of a battery hog and can feel slow, especially with many animations and auto-playing videos in the feed. It's not as smooth as simpler apps like Indeed or Glassdoor, which load faster on older phones.
