Galaxy Attack is a classic space shooter that feels like a direct love letter to the old-school arcade cabinets I grew up with. If you have ever played something like Galaga or Space Invaders but wished it had a bit more modern juice, this is the android app for you. It's primarily a mobile game available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, but I have also seen some players running it on PC via emulators, though there is no official Steam or Xbox/Switch release. The game first launched back in 2018 and has since racked up over 10 million installs on Google Play alone, which is pretty impressive for a niche genre. The best part? It is completely free to download and play. There are in-game purchases, but they are mostly for cosmetic ship skins or energy refills if you want to grind faster. I have personally spent maybe $5 on a shield upgrade, but you can absolutely beat the main campaign without spending a dime. The app does feature some optional ads that you can watch for extra power-ups, but they are not intrusive like those forced video ads that ruin the flow of gameplay.

Gameplay is straightforward but addictive. You control a small ship at the bottom of the screen, dodging waves of alien enemies while blasting them to pieces. The best part has to be the boss fights. Every couple of levels, you face a massive enemy ship that fills half the screen, and taking it down requires precise timing with your special attacks. My personal favorite feature is the "laser storm" power-up, which turns your ship into a death machine for a few seconds. It feels incredibly satisfying when you catch a whole squadron of enemies in that beam. The controls are simple tap-and-drag, which works perfectly on a touchscreen. I have played this on both my phone and tablet, and the experience is smooth across both devices. The difficulty ramps up nicely too, starting easy enough for a quick session on the bus but later demanding real focus if you want to survive on the harder difficulties.

Compared to other mobile shooters like Sky Force Reloaded or Galaga Wars, Galaxy Attack nails the "pick-up-and-play" feeling better than most. Sky Force requires you to upgrade your ship heavily between runs, which can feel like a chore if you just want to blast aliens for ten minutes. Galaxy Attack keeps it simple: your skill matters more than your wallet. The graphics are brighter and more colorful than Galaga Wars, which felt a bit washed out on my phone. I also appreciate that the app runs fine on older devices, so you do not need a flagship android to enjoy smooth 60fps action. If you are looking for a no-nonsense space shooter that respects your time and does not shove microtransactions in your face every five seconds, this install is worth your storage space.

features

  • Classic Arcade Feel 🕹️: Unlike Galaga Wars which tries to add unnecessary story elements, Galaxy Attack sticks to the pure arcade formula. You just shoot, dodge, and survive. No cutscenes, no fluff.
  • Upgrade System 🚀: The ship upgrades are straightforward and meaningful. You can boost firepower, shield strength, or special attack recharge. It is not as grindy as Sky Force where you need to replay the same level ten times just to afford a minor stat boost.
  • Boss Variety 👾: Each world has a different boss with unique attack patterns. Some fire spiral bullet patterns, others summon minions. This keeps the gameplay fresh compared to other android shooters where bosses are just palette swaps.

pros

  • No Pay-to-Win 🛡️: This is huge for a free app. You can beat the entire campaign without buying anything. Galaga Wars gates progress behind premium currency, but Galaxy Attack lets you earn everything through gameplay.
  • Smooth Performance ⚡: The game runs at a solid 60fps even on my old android tablet. Sky Force sometimes stutters during heavy enemy waves, but this one stays buttery smooth.
  • Quick Sessions ✅: Levels last about 2-3 minutes, perfect for a quick play. While Galaga Wars levels drag on forever, Galaxy Attack respects your time. I can finish three stages during my lunch break.
  • Visual Feedback 🌟: Explosions and particle effects are satisfying. When you destroy an enemy ship, it explodes into colorful fragments. Space Invaders clones look dull in comparison.

cons

  • Limited Depth 🌊: After about 50 levels, the gameplay loop gets repetitive. Unlike Sky Force which has unique objectives like rescuing prisoners in each stage, Galaxy Attack just throws more enemies at you with higher HP. I wish there were more mission variety.
  • No Online Multiplayer 🤝: You cannot play with friends or compete in real-time leaderboards. Galaga Wars at least has weekly tournaments with prizes. Here, you only get high scores that reset when you close the app.
  • Grindy for Completionists 🔄: Unlocking all ship skins requires dozens of hours of play. The drop rates for rare parts are low, similar to loot boxes in other games. If you are a perfectionist who wants everything, prepare for a long grind.
  • Ad Frequency During Death 💀: When you lose all lives, the game sometimes triggers an optional ad before retrying. It is not forced, but the button is placed right next to "continue," so I have accidentally tapped it a few times. Sky Force handles this more gracefully with a simple "watch ad to revive" prompt.
