RootsTech isn't a typical game in the vein of an RPG or a first-person shooter. It's more of an interactive genealogy conference and learning platform, which is a pretty niche genre. You won't find it blasting baddies on Steam or your Xbox or Switch. This is a pure mobile and web-based experience. The app first launched in 2019 on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, and it's essentially a companion to the massive yearly RootsTech conference held in Salt Lake City. On Android, the Google Play download count is over 500,000 installs, which is impressive for such a specific interest app. The best part? It's completely free to download and install. There are no in-app purchases to unlock content or paywalled features, and while you might see some in-app ads for related FamilySearch services or partner products, they are not intrusive. You're not going to get nickel-and-dimed for trying to learn about your great-grandparents.
Playing RootsTech is like having a backstage pass to a giant family history convention, but from your couch. You can browse through hundreds of recorded classes and keynote speeches on topics ranging from "Finding Your Immigrant Ancestor" to "Using DNA Painter." The best part for me is the interactive schedule. You can plan out which live sessions you want to watch during the actual conference weekend, and the app sends you reminders. But my favorite part is the "Marketplace" feature. It's a virtual expo hall where you can discover other Android apps and tools that help with genealogy, like specific record databases or photo restoration apps. It feels less like a game and more like a massive, well-organized library that's constantly updating with new content. The social aspect is there too—you can see what other attendees are interested in and connect with people who share your hobby.
If you compare RootsTech to something like Ancestry or MyHeritage, you'll find a key difference. Those are full-on research platforms where you build your tree and dig into records. RootsTech is purely educational and inspirational. It doesn't let you build a family tree within the app. You use it to learn how to use those other platforms better. I'd recommend RootsTech over searching blindly on YouTube because the content is curated, high-quality, and presented by industry experts. It's not for everyone; if you have zero interest in your family history, you'll be bored. But if you've ever done a DNA test and wondered "Now what?", this app is the perfect guide. It's a fantastic supplement to the main FamilySearch app, which is more about the actual tree building. Think of RootsTech as the tutorial and the inspiration hub for the whole family history gaming ecosystem.
features
- Curated Video Library 📹: Unlike YouTube where you wade through low-quality vlogs, every video in RootsTech is from a verified presenter. The app organizes these classes by topic, skill level, and even language, making it super easy to find exactly what you need without wasting time.
- Live Streaming Hub 📡: During the annual conference, this Android app becomes your front-row seat. You can watch keynotes from celebrities and genealogists live, interact with the chat, and ask questions. It's a much more engaging experience than watching a static recording on a website.
- Integrated Schedule Builder 📅: This feature is a lifesaver. You can browse the entire conference syllabus, mark the sessions you want to attend, and the app will alert you 15 minutes before they start. It syncs across devices, so I can plan on my tablet and check on my phone.
- Marketplace & Exhibitor List 🛍️: This is a hidden gem. Instead of wandering a massive convention floor, you can browse a digital list of all the vendors and sponsors. Many offer free "exclusive" downloads or trial codes for their services right from the app, which is a huge bonus.
- Social Discovery 👥: You can see profiles of other attendees and presenters. It's not as deep as Facebook, but you can find people with shared geographical research interests and send them a message. It feels more like a focused community than a general social network.
pros
- Accessibility is Top-Notch 🆓: The biggest strength is that it's completely free. No premium tier. No $19.99 monthly subscription. Compared to FamilyTreeWebinars, which charges a hefty annual fee for its library, RootsTech gives you hundreds of hours of expert content for the price of a Google Play download. That's unbeatable value.
- Content Quality is Exceptional 🎓: This isn't user-generated content. Every class is reviewed by the FamilySearch team. You get lessons from PhDs, professional genealogists, and even celebrities like LeVar Burton who talk about their own journey. The production value is higher than any "Let's Play" video you'll ever see.
- Perfect for Beginners 👶: I started using this app knowing nothing about how to decode handwriting on a 1900 census. The "Beginner" filter is amazing. It offers simple, step-by-step classes that teach you the fundamentals without overwhelming you with jargon. It's much more welcoming than the community forums on Ancestry.
- Year-Round Usability 🗓️: Even when the conference isn't on, the app is full of hundreds of hours of content from past years. It's not a one-week app that you uninstall. I've been using it for months, working through the "DNA 201" track at my own pace. It has incredible replay value.
cons
- Not a Research Tool 🔍: My biggest frustration is that you cannot actually build your family tree here. If you open the app expecting to enter names and search records, you'll be disappointed. It's purely for learning. You must use a separate app like FamilySearch or Ancestry for the actual work, which breaks the flow.
- Requires Strong Internet Connection 🌐: The entire app is streaming-based. You cannot download the videos for offline viewing. If you're on a long train ride or in a remote area with poor signal, the app is useless. I wish they had an "offline playlist" option like Spotify does. History Hit offers this, and it's a much better experience.
- Heavy Promotion for FamilySearch 🏢: While you don't have to use their main app, the app constantly nudges you to create a free FamilySearch account and use their tree. It's not pushy ads, but the entire ecosystem is clearly designed to funnel you into the paid (though free) FamilySearch universe. It feels less neutral than a platform like Legacy Family Tree Webinars.
- No Social Network Depth 💬: The social features are very basic. You can see who is attending the conference, but you can't form groups or have long-form discussions about a specific lecture. Compared to the vibrant subreddits or Genealogy Facebook groups, this app's community aspect feels shallow and underdeveloped.
