LEGO Batman: Beyond Gotham is an action-adventure game that combines the classic LEGO toy charm with the dark, gritty world of Batman. This game first launched on mobile platforms, specifically on the Google Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS, and has been installed over 10 million times on Google Play alone. The great thing for gamers is that it's a free game to download and play, unlike its console and PC counterparts which usually cost around $20 to $30. However, it does include in-app purchases, typically ranging from $1.99 to $99.99, which unlock characters, gold bricks, or other content. The game is also available on PC via Steam, as well as on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, but these versions are paid. I've been playing on Android, and the mobile version is definitely a different experience from the console one.

In LEGO Batman: Beyond Gotham, you control Batman and a huge roster of DC heroes and villains, traveling not just through Gotham but across the entire DC universe, including locations like the Watchtower and the Batcave. You can switch between characters on the fly, each with unique abilities, like Superman's flight or Cyborg's hacking skills, which you need to solve puzzles and fight enemies. The best part for me is the massive open world hub areas; you can fly around Metropolis or explore Gotham's streets, doing side quests or just smashing LEGO objects for studs. My favorite aspect is the vehicle combat segments, like flying the Batwing or driving the Batmobile in space missions. It feels really satisfying, and the humor in the cutscenes, like Batman's deadpan reactions, keeps me laughing even after hours of playtime.

Compared to other mobile LEGO games, like LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, this one offers a much bigger world and more variety in characters and locations. LEGO Star Wars focuses on linear levels, but Beyond Gotham gives you more freedom to explore. If you've played LEGO Marvel Super Heroes on PC or console, you'll feel right at home here. The biggest reason I recommend this over similar games is the sheer amount of content you get for free. On Android, there's no upfront cost to download and install it, and you can grind your way through without spending money if you're patient. For a game that originally cost $50 on Steam, having it free on Google Play is a steal, even with the in-app purchases.

features

  • Massive Character Roster 🦸 You get over 100 characters from the DC universe, including Batman, Joker, Superman, and even obscure ones like Black Manta. Unlike LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga on mobile, which has a smaller set, here you can collect and upgrade every hero and villain.
  • Open World Exploration 🌍 Instead of linear levels, you have huge sandbox maps like Gotham City, Metropolis, and the Watchtower. This is way more engaging than LEGO Harry Potter's corridor-style gameplay, as you can fly, drive, or grapple anywhere.
  • Unique Combat System ⚔️ The game blends LEGO's classic puzzle-solving with streamlined tapping controls on Android. You can chain attacks and use special moves from characters like Flash for speed. It feels more responsive than LEGO Marvel's mobile port, which sometimes lags during fights.

pros

  • Free to Download and Play 🆓 On Android and iOS, you can download and install the full game without paying a cent, unlike LEGO Batman 2 on Steam, which costs around $20. This makes it accessible to everyone, and the in-app purchases are optional for grinding, not forced.
  • Great Voice Acting and Humor 🎭 The game features actual voice lines from actors like Kevin Conroy as Batman, which adds a layer of authenticity you don't get in LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. The jokes during cutscenes are genuinely funny, keeping the mood light even on tough boss fights.
  • Regular Updates and Events 📅 Warner Bros. occasionally adds new characters or missions for free on Google Play, like the “Dark Knight” content. Games like LEGO Jurassic World on mobile get stale after a few months, but this title keeps you coming back with fresh challenges.

cons

  • Heavy In-App Purchase Pressure 💰 On Android, the game nudges you to buy stud packs or character unlocks with real money, and some of the best heroes like Ares are locked behind a $5 paywall. In contrast, LEGO The Lord of the Rings on console lets you earn everything through gameplay without any microtransactions.
  • Performance Issues on Older Devices 📱 The mobile version can stutter or crash on older Android phones, especially during the open-world flying sections. I've had my app freeze a few times on my Galaxy S9, while LEGO Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin runs smoother on the same hardware.
  • Repetitive Side Missions Quests 🤷 The side activities, like collecting gold bricks or rescuing civilians, feel samey after a while. Compared to LEGO City Undercover's varied missions, Beyond Gotham's objectives get boring, and you often do the same “smash-and-build” pattern over and over.
