My Talking Tom 2 is a classic virtual pet simulator, a genre that's been a staple on mobile devices for years. Developed by Outfit7 Limited, this is a pure mobile game, available on both Android and iOS—specifically you can find it on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. It first launched back in 2018, and since then it's racked up over 100 million installs on Google Play alone, which tells you just how popular it is. The game is free to download and play, but like most free-to-play mobile apps, it's packed with in-game purchases. You can buy coins, diamonds, and special items, with prices ranging from a dollar or two for a small pack up to around $50 for the biggest bundles. There are also in-app ads, but you can watch them voluntarily for bonuses, which is a fair trade-off. It's not available on PC via Steam or on consoles like Xbox or Switch, so this is a dedicated mobile experience through and through.
Gameplay is straightforward and addictive. You adopt Tom and then spend your time feeding him, washing him, dressing him up, and decorating his house. You level him up by completing tasks and mini-games, which unlocks new rooms, furniture, and outfits. The best part is the sheer variety of activities. You can play the "Paw Painter" mini-game for a quick score, take Tom to the potty, or just mess around with the interactive toys. My favorite part has to be customizing Tom's wardrobe. There's a massive selection of clothes, from silly hats to full superhero suits, and you can mix and match to create a ridiculous look. It sounds simple, but it's weirdly satisfying to dress him up as a pirate chef or a disco astronaut. The graphics are also a step up from the original, with more detail in Tom's fur and the house environments, which makes the whole experience feel a bit more polished on your Android or iOS device.
Compared to other virtual pet games, like My Boo or Pou, My Talking Tom 2 feels much more robust. Pou is fun for a quick check-in, but it's very basic and the customization is limited. My Boo has a similar vibe but lacks the same level of polish and content. What sets Tom apart is the sheer scope of the house and the mini-games. You're not just feeding a pet in one room; you're building out a full house with a kitchen, a bedroom, a garden, and even a laboratory. The mini-games are also more varied than the repetitive tapping you get in some other apps. Plus, Tom actually reacts to your touch—he talks back (in his gibberish language), he laughs, and he sneezes. It makes him feel more like a real character than a pixelated blob. If you've ever spent time with Nintendogs or Tamagotchi, this is the modern mobile equivalent, but with way more depth. I'd recommend this game over others because it keeps giving you new goals to chase, whether it's unlocking a new outfit or reaching the next level cap, and that progression makes you want to keep coming back to your Google Play store app.
features
- Voice Interaction 🎤: Tom repeats everything you say in a high-pitched voice, and you can record these to use as phone notifications. It's a goofy feature that adds a lot of personality compared to a silent pet like in My Boo.
- Dynamic House Customization 🏠: You can expand your house from one room to a full mansion over time. Unlike Pou where you just unlock backgrounds, here you fully decorate each room with furniture and wallpapers, making the space yours.
- Mini-Game Variety 🎮: There are over a dozen mini-games, from puzzle matches to endless runners. This beats the simple tapping mini-games in similar apps like Talking Tom Gold Run, as it gives you more ways to earn currency without getting bored.
pros
- Deep Customization Options 🌟: The sheer amount of outfits, hairstyles, and furniture is insane compared to other virtual pet games. For example, My Boo gives you a few basic options, but My Talking Tom 2 lets you dress Tom in over 200 items, so you can truly express your style on your Android device.
- Progressive Leveling System 📈: Each level unlocks new content, like a new room or a special item. This keeps you hooked because there's always a reward just around the corner, unlike simpler games like Pou where you just feed and play without significant long-term goals.
- No Forced Ads 🚫: You choose when to watch ads for bonuses like extra coins, instead of being interrupted mid-game. This is a major plus compared to similar free apps where pop-up ads ruin the flow, making the download feel more respectful of your time.
cons
- Aggressive In-App Purchases 💸: The game constantly pushes you to buy coins or diamonds, especially when you hit a level wall. In contrast, other games like Voxel Octopus are more generous with free currency, so Tom feels a bit too money-hungry for a free-to-play app.
- Repetitive Late-Game Grind ⏳: After level 30 or so, the tasks become very repetitive—just feeding and washing over and over. Comparing it to Nintendogs on the DS, which had more varied interactions like teaching tricks, this game lacks that depth once the novelty wears off on Google Play.
- Bugs and Glitches Occasionally 🐛: Sometimes Tom gets stuck in an animation, or the camera angle glitches in a room. While updates fix these, they pop up often enough to be annoying, and I've seen similar issues reported on the App Store. Other sims like Pou run more smoothly on older Android devices.
